Jazz workshop with Giedre Paplaityte!

October 4, 2010 - 6:35 pm No Comments

Next Wednesday, October 13th, we are lucky to have Giedre Paplaityte teaching two authentic jazz workshops for us during our normal Wednesday class. The classes will be held at 19:30 and 21:00 at the Centre at St Pauls, with our usual half-hour of social dancing in between. Both classes will be accessible to all levels, and will cost our usual price of £4/5 for one class and £5/6£6 for two.

Giedre started dancing before she went to school. As a child she was always surrounded by music but never thought that dancing could become the essence of her life. After taking a bunch of folk and modern dance classes Giedre discovered Lindy Hop in 2003. Since then jazz dances became her own art of life.

Together with her fellow dancers Giedre started teaching Lindy Hop in her hometown Vilnius in 2006. She is a member of Lindyhop.lt dance troupe with whom Giedre travels and performs. Sharing the love for jazz dances and teaching jazz dances is her biggest passion. Since 2007 she is teaching solo and with Mindaugas Bikauskas.

Giedre has made her first steps as an international teacher in spring of 2010. After the first success she has participated in several international jazz dance contests and has been seen on the social dance floor in New York, Hamburg and Stockholm just to mention a few.

“Show and tell” this Saturday!

September 28, 2010 - 6:52 pm No Comments

An exciting new venture for Cambridge Lindy Hoppers! Come along to Ross Street Community Centre on Saturday between 14:30 and 16:30 to swap ideas and learn from each other. We don’t want this to be just another class, with most of the ideas flowing from one or two people. It’s about everybody contributing and helping each other to improve.

Come along with an idea that you would like to share. It could be…
* A move that you think is cool (maybe you haven’t figured out *exactly* how to pull it off, maybe you invented it, maybe it’s your favourite and you think everyone should know how to do it!)
* A concept (way of moving, connecting or placing your weight, or even something more abstract than that)
* A game that you want to try out

Preferably, it should be something that you’ve picked up from somewhere other than Cambridge Lindy Hoppers. It could be from…
* A workshop or event that you’ve been to recently
* A Youtube video (if so, bring the clip on a USB memory stick)
* The Drama school that you went to in your teens
* Anywhere else in real life that you think could apply to lindy.

If it’s an idea that you’ve had that’s not *completely* fully formed, that’s okay, as long as you can explain your thoughts well enough that we can work on it together.

Remember, don’t come empty handed! We’ll try to get through as many ideas as possible, but we won’t have time to work on everybody’s so don’t be disappointed if we don’t get around to your idea this time. With any luck there’ll be a next time :-)

Prices: Members £1 Non-members £2

Practice Session

September 3, 2010 - 8:29 am No Comments

We’re pleased to announce that we’re going to run a Sunday practice session. Think of it as an informal social dance where you can have a chat about the latest move that you’ve learnt or just swing out to some great music. Have a look at the event page.

Summer classes on Wednesdays

August 10, 2010 - 9:30 am No Comments

Over the next four weeks our Wednesday classes will be one hour specials for all levels.  Starting at the usual time of 7.30pm there will be a mixture of blues, fun lindy and more besides so this is a great time to come along and try something different.  See the CLH calendar for more information.

Classes will be back to normal on the 8th September 2010 with a new block of Lindy with Gerald and Maria.

CLH Stash has Landed!

July 4, 2010 - 10:20 pm No Comments

Following our logo competition, we now have a range of CLH T-shirts and tops in which to look amazingly cool on and off the dance floor :-) .

In order to get one (or more!) listen carefully:

1) Pay a visit to our ‘shop’ at http://lindy.spreadshirt.co.uk/ and choose your top and size. You’re welcome to order direct if you want, but to save on postage the society will be making bulk orders – see below.

2) If you want to be part of the bulk ordering, send an e-mail to stash [at] cambridgelindy [dot] com with the name, colour and size of the top you’d like.

3) Pay the appropriate amount for your top at one of our evening classes, at the same time as you usually pay for the class. We can’t include your top in an order until you’ve done this!

4) Wait in fevered anticipation for your top to arrive! (When a decent number of people have asked for something, we’ll put in an order)

Matt and Lotte are coming!

June 25, 2010 - 10:28 am No Comments

For one night only, on 7th July, Matt and Lotte are back! This is the fourth week of our block, so they’re going to teach a mixed level class at 7:30, then there will be social dancing from 8:30-10:30, probably followed by the jazz-funk jam at La Raza.

Come and party like it’s 2007! And if you’ve joined CLH since they left us to go to Australia (*sob*), come and party anyway! They’d love to meet all the lovely people who dance with us now.

A busy summer!

June 18, 2010 - 3:43 pm No Comments

Next Friday, 25th June, CLH will be holding a garden
party for CLH members! We’ll provide the barbecue, you bring the food.
Time and location are to follow, but put the date in your diary now. If you’re not a member, now is an excellent time, as membership is a wonderful £3/£4 and lasts until the end of October.

On Saturday 3rd July, come and spread the lindy love to people on the
streets of Cambridge. The plan is to enjoy some social dancing and
strolls (with a couple of troupe routines mixed in). Our slots are 2-3
pm at Peas Hill (side of the Guildhall) and 4-5 pm Quayside. Also,
there will be a party (with food, music and dance) for everyone
involved in the Buskers Festival on Saturday 3rd July from 6pm – late,
at The Cricketers, Melbourn Place, Cambridge. Do come along and join
it – it’s been great fun in previous years!

Sunday 11 July is the Heart of the World festival, “a city-wide event
raising the profile of world music and culture in Cambridge” and the
second day of the Big Weekend, all on Parkers Piece. The troupe will
be doing demos some time after 1pm, and there will be a flash mob that
everyone can join in with at 3pm. We have no idea what to expect but
have been told “you just need to turn up”. Sounds like fun! Who wants
to come along and see what happens?

As if that’s not enough, Jazz on Jesus Green is back, with bands
playing on Sunday 20th June, Sunday 8th August, and Sunday 29th
August. Come along with a picnic, for afternoons of chatting and
dancing!

Finally, on 1st July, registration for the hottest event of the year
will open: Cambridge Lindy Exchange 2010. Relaxed and friendly with
three brilliant bands and more cake than you can shake a stick at,
this weekend of dancing and socialising attracts dancers from all over
the world, and is not to be missed. There are only 100 places and they
sell fast so be ready to claim yours.

Last but not least, both the Speakeasy on Monday and Wednesday classes
will be continuing throughout the summer. Keep those Mondays and
Wednesdays free!

Logo Competition Results

June 3, 2010 - 8:02 am No Comments

Thanks again to all who entered and voted, it’s great to see people getting involved.

We’re now able to announce that after a close competition the winning design is Scott Kelly’s ‘Hopping Couple’ – congratulations!

Logo winner

It has been necessary to slightly re-work the design, with Scott’s agreement, due to some potential copyright concerns, but we’ve now got a truly original CLH logo which we hope you’ll agree remains true to Scott’s original theme.

The logo will be put straight to work on the CLH website and literature, and on a new selection of society stash which will be available soon!

As the winner, Scott will receive an item of his choice from the stash catalogue.

Voting Numbers:

Only 1st choice votes were used, as there were no tied entries to be decided by 2nd or 3rd choice votes.

In order the top three results were:
1 – ‘Hopping Couple’ – Scott Kelly – 12 votes
2 – ‘Swinging Couple with CLH Banner’ – Jenny Merrifield – 11 votes
3 – ‘Lindy Punt 1′ – Scott Kelly – 7 votes

Thanks again to all the other entrants: Katherine Watson, Jay Weatherley, Lara Osmotherly and Steph Moore.

If you have any queries, please get in touch or talk to one of the committee.

let someone on the committee know if you’d like to get involved.
