It’s a kind of experimental first attempt, so if you’re interested in seeing social blues more frequently in Cambridge please come along to show your support and encourage the organisers to do more of the same!

“One thing Cambridge has lacked is a Blues Dance night – until now!

 We’ll kick things off with a taster lesson from Blues Revolution regular Cater Holloran (aka Professor Funkilicious), then get our hip-shakin’ party on ’til 11pm. Carter and I will be DJing, and I’ll throw in some live blues for y’all as well, all for just £5.

 The Great Northern pub is on the corner of Station Road (it’s 2 minutes walk from the station and the last train back to King’s Cross is 23.15, just sayin’). They have a downstairs function room/bar we’ll be turning into a juke joint for the evening – so come on out and show you want more blues in Cambridge!”

The workshop will be for two hours and will begin at 2pm on the 19th February. The first lesson will be for blues beginners and work on basic blues movement. The second hour will build on the first lesson and introduce more style with some cool moves that can be used on the social dance floor. Spaces are limited so please give an indication on Facebook if you intend to come.

The teachers are Victoria McGookin and our very own Graham Hazel.

Victoria started out life as a lindy hopper. Four private classes in 2008 with the incredible, but sadly very professional, Peter Vawter converted her to blues, and she has been learning ever since. Musically expressive and technically proficient, she is a familiar face on the Dublin and London dance scenes, and travels far for her blues fix. After winning at BBB in 2010, Victoria is thrilled to be returning this year as part of the teaching team. As her students will attest, she is a warm, enthusiastic teacher, and a consummate professional.

Time: 1400 – 1600 (please arrive in time for a start at 1400 sharp!)

You can read about the AGM in the constitution on the website here but in summary the agenda will be: a review of CLH activities in 2011; a review of CLH finances in 2011; election of a new committee; any other business and general discussion.

Electing a new committee is an important part of the AGM. If you think you’d like to stand for a position on the committee, please do talk to one of the existing committee about what it involves.

There is a maximum of eight committee members – President, Treasurer and six general committee members. Anyone standing for a position must be a current CLH member, and be proposed and seconded by two other CLH members. Dancing skill or experience is not important, what is important is enthusiasm and being to commit significant time and effort to helping with running CLH and all the behind the scenes work that goes on.

If you do want to stand for a position on the committee, please send your name, the names of your proposer and seconder, the position you are standing for (President, Treasurer or general committee member) and a paragraph on why you think you’d be a good member of the committee, to info@cambridgelindy.com by the end of Friday 17th February.

If there is no competition for committee places (i.e. nominations for one President, one Treasurer and six or fewer general committee members) the society will be asked to approve the committee on a ‘general aye’.

If there is competition for places an election will be organised after the AGM. Please note you must also be a current CLH member to vote in any election.

Please do come along to show your support for CLH and have an opportunity to get involved and give your feedback – there will be some time for general discussion on any points people raise.
