Boat Race Boogie

February 13, 2011 - 6:05 pm 1 Comment

The Oxford and Cambridge Lindy Hoppers present the Boat Race Boogie

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race has been an international sporting event since 1829, surely the perfect reason to dance! Not that we need one.

We’ll be spending the weekend dancing, punting, and of course, watching the race. Everyone is welcome, though you may have to to choose a side.

Saturday 26th March

11.00 – Lunch and a Lindy Bomb for those in Oxford early.

13.00-17.00 – Join us for an afternoon of dancing and watching the big event (don’t worry – they row fast so we’ll have plenty of time for dancing).

20.00-1.00 – Celebrate Oxford’s Cambridge’s victory in the race at the Boat Race Jump Session.

Sunday 27th March

12.00-17:30 – Pub lunch and punting. End your weekend with great food and dancing – we’ll be giving the losing side a chance to restore their honour with an Oxford v. Cambridge punt race.

Tickets for Cambridge dancers are half price. Come along to one of our classes for details. Everyone else, please book through the Oxford Lindy Hoppers event page:

CLH Annual General Meeting

February 9, 2011 - 12:30 am No Comments

The 2011 AGM will take place on Wednesday 23rd February at 8:30pm (after the first class).

Each year at the AGM a new committee is elected, typically consisting of some existing and some new committee members. The committee members are responsible for keeping the society running. This involves planning events, booking teachers, bands and venues, and taking care of the money, equipment, publicity, and so on. The perks of being on the committee include free entry to all CLH classes, events and workshops, and the opportunity and responsibility to guide the future direction and growth of the society.

Serving on the committee is a great way to see and drive the inner workings of CLH and give something back to the society.

If you would like to know more about serving on the committee, please speak to one of the current members of the committee. You will need to be nominated and seconded by a current CLH Society member.

If you would like to stand for the 2011/12 committee tell any of the current committee, we’ll send out details of those standing for election to the CLH members.

Jazz workshop with Giedre Paplaityte!

October 4, 2010 - 6:35 pm No Comments

Next Wednesday, October 13th, we are lucky to have Giedre Paplaityte teaching two authentic jazz workshops for us during our normal Wednesday class. The classes will be held at 19:30 and 21:00 at the Centre at St Pauls, with our usual half-hour of social dancing in between. Both classes will be accessible to all levels, and will cost our usual price of £4/5 for one class and £5/6£6 for two.

Giedre started dancing before she went to school. As a child she was always surrounded by music but never thought that dancing could become the essence of her life. After taking a bunch of folk and modern dance classes Giedre discovered Lindy Hop in 2003. Since then jazz dances became her own art of life.

Together with her fellow dancers Giedre started teaching Lindy Hop in her hometown Vilnius in 2006. She is a member of Lindyhop.lt dance troupe with whom Giedre travels and performs. Sharing the love for jazz dances and teaching jazz dances is her biggest passion. Since 2007 she is teaching solo and with Mindaugas Bikauskas.

Giedre has made her first steps as an international teacher in spring of 2010. After the first success she has participated in several international jazz dance contests and has been seen on the social dance floor in New York, Hamburg and Stockholm just to mention a few.

“Show and tell” this Saturday!

September 28, 2010 - 6:52 pm No Comments

An exciting new venture for Cambridge Lindy Hoppers! Come along to Ross Street Community Centre on Saturday between 14:30 and 16:30 to swap ideas and learn from each other. We don’t want this to be just another class, with most of the ideas flowing from one or two people. It’s about everybody contributing and helping each other to improve.

Come along with an idea that you would like to share. It could be…
* A move that you think is cool (maybe you haven’t figured out *exactly* how to pull it off, maybe you invented it, maybe it’s your favourite and you think everyone should know how to do it!)
* A concept (way of moving, connecting or placing your weight, or even something more abstract than that)
* A game that you want to try out

Preferably, it should be something that you’ve picked up from somewhere other than Cambridge Lindy Hoppers. It could be from…
* A workshop or event that you’ve been to recently
* A Youtube video (if so, bring the clip on a USB memory stick)
* The Drama school that you went to in your teens
* Anywhere else in real life that you think could apply to lindy.

If it’s an idea that you’ve had that’s not *completely* fully formed, that’s okay, as long as you can explain your thoughts well enough that we can work on it together.

Remember, don’t come empty handed! We’ll try to get through as many ideas as possible, but we won’t have time to work on everybody’s so don’t be disappointed if we don’t get around to your idea this time. With any luck there’ll be a next time :-)

Prices: Members £1 Non-members £2
