CLH Stash has Landed!

July 4, 2010 - 10:20 pm No Comments

Following our logo competition, we now have a range of CLH T-shirts and tops in which to look amazingly cool on and off the dance floor :-) .

In order to get one (or more!) listen carefully:

1) Pay a visit to our ‘shop’ at http://lindy.spreadshirt.co.uk/ and choose your top and size. You’re welcome to order direct if you want, but to save on postage the society will be making bulk orders – see below.

2) If you want to be part of the bulk ordering, send an e-mail to stash@cambridgelindy.com with the name, colour and size of the top you’d like.

3) Pay the appropriate amount for your top at one of our evening classes, at the same time as you usually pay for the class. We can’t include your top in an order until you’ve done this!

4) Wait in fevered anticipation for your top to arrive! (When a decent number of people have asked for something, we’ll put in an order)

Matt and Lotte are coming!

June 25, 2010 - 10:28 am No Comments

For one night only, on 7th July, Matt and Lotte are back! This is the fourth week of our block, so they’re going to teach a mixed level class at 7:30, then there will be social dancing from 8:30-10:30, probably followed by the jazz-funk jam at La Raza.

Come and party like it’s 2007! And if you’ve joined CLH since they left us to go to Australia (*sob*), come and party anyway! They’d love to meet all the lovely people who dance with us now.

A busy summer!

June 18, 2010 - 3:43 pm No Comments

Next Friday, 25th June, CLH will be holding a garden
party for CLH members! We’ll provide the barbecue, you bring the food.
Time and location are to follow, but put the date in your diary now. If you’re not a member, now is an excellent time, as membership is a wonderful £3/£4 and lasts until the end of October.

On Saturday 3rd July, come and spread the lindy love to people on the
streets of Cambridge. The plan is to enjoy some social dancing and
strolls (with a couple of troupe routines mixed in). Our slots are 2-3
pm at Peas Hill (side of the Guildhall) and 4-5 pm Quayside. Also,
there will be a party (with food, music and dance) for everyone
involved in the Buskers Festival on Saturday 3rd July from 6pm – late,
at The Cricketers, Melbourn Place, Cambridge. Do come along and join
it – it’s been great fun in previous years!

Sunday 11 July is the Heart of the World festival, “a city-wide event
raising the profile of world music and culture in Cambridge” and the
second day of the Big Weekend, all on Parkers Piece. The troupe will
be doing demos some time after 1pm, and there will be a flash mob that
everyone can join in with at 3pm. We have no idea what to expect but
have been told “you just need to turn up”. Sounds like fun! Who wants
to come along and see what happens?

As if that’s not enough, Jazz on Jesus Green is back, with bands
playing on Sunday 20th June, Sunday 8th August, and Sunday 29th
August. Come along with a picnic, for afternoons of chatting and
dancing!

Finally, on 1st July, registration for the hottest event of the year
will open: Cambridge Lindy Exchange 2010. Relaxed and friendly with
three brilliant bands and more cake than you can shake a stick at,
this weekend of dancing and socialising attracts dancers from all over
the world, and is not to be missed. There are only 100 places and they
sell fast so be ready to claim yours.

Last but not least, both the Speakeasy on Monday and Wednesday classes
will be continuing throughout the summer. Keep those Mondays and
Wednesdays free!

Logo Competition Results

June 3, 2010 - 8:02 am No Comments

Thanks again to all who entered and voted, it’s great to see people getting involved.

We’re now able to announce that after a close competition the winning design is Scott Kelly’s ‘Hopping Couple’ – congratulations!

Logo winner

It has been necessary to slightly re-work the design, with Scott’s agreement, due to some potential copyright concerns, but we’ve now got a truly original CLH logo which we hope you’ll agree remains true to Scott’s original theme.

The logo will be put straight to work on the CLH website and literature, and on a new selection of society stash which will be available soon!

As the winner, Scott will receive an item of his choice from the stash catalogue.

Voting Numbers:

Only 1st choice votes were used, as there were no tied entries to be decided by 2nd or 3rd choice votes.

In order the top three results were:
1 – ‘Hopping Couple’ – Scott Kelly – 12 votes
2 – ‘Swinging Couple with CLH Banner’ – Jenny Merrifield – 11 votes
3 – ‘Lindy Punt 1′ – Scott Kelly – 7 votes

Thanks again to all the other entrants: Katherine Watson, Jay Weatherley, Lara Osmotherly and Steph Moore.

If you have any queries, please get in touch or talk to one of the committee.

New block, blues workshop, and CLX 2010

May 19, 2010 - 6:53 pm No Comments

The CLH schedule is getting pretty busy. We have a new block starting
tonight, taught by Katherine and Graham, and we’ve got more fab band
nights lined up at the Speakeasy on Mondays:
24/05/2010 Rob James Trio
07/06/2010 Better Than TV
14/06/2010 Rob James Trio
21/06/2010 Colin Hazel

We’re also very excited to announce that we have the amazing Dave
Madison and Ursula Ledergerber coming to teach a Blues workshop on
Saturday 19th June, between 10 and 4. Dave and Ursi are
internationally renowned Blues teachers who first taught for us in
2008, and we’re thrilled to pieces that they’re coming back. The
workshop will be £16/£18 members/non-members; see
http://www.cambridgelindy.com/events/blues-workshop-june-2010/ for
more information and to book. This workshop is sure to be very popular
so do book fast!

On Saturday 5th June CLH will be doing a fun class in the Grafton
Centre at 11.30am – it’d be great to see some of you there and help
get the shoppers up and dancing. The event organisers are looking for
pairs or small groups of dancers to do some fun short performances, do
let someone on the committee know if you’d like to get involved.

We’re also really pleased to confirm that CLX 2010 will be happening
between 15th-17th October, so block out that weekend in your diary and
prepare for a weekend of delicious dancing and fabulous fun.
Registration will be open on July 1st and we sold out within a month
last year, so be ready to book when it opens, and make sure all your
friends know about it.

Finally, we had some brilliant entries in our logo competition and
tonight is the last night you can vote for them. If you’re a member,
hop along to class tonight to cast your vote. If you’re not a member,
why not join? Membership is only £3/£4 students/non-students, gets you
a pound off all classes and a larger discount on bigger events, and
lasts until 31 October.

Tonight’s classes cancelled

May 5, 2010 - 1:22 pm No Comments

Both of tonight’s classes are cancelled because the Bodyworks’ annual
show is taking place in the church. I’m very sorry for the short
notice, but the Centre only realised there was a clash an hour or so
ago. We will be back as normal next week.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight though, do please work
on your entries for the logo competition to win free stash! The
deadline is this Friday so don’t delay!

Logo competition!

April 15, 2010 - 7:23 am No Comments

CLH needs a cool new logo and we want the members to get involved in designing and choosing it! We are therefore holding a competition over the next few weeks to find the new CLH’s logo.

This is a great opportunity for you to put some of those creative juices to work and help to improve CLH even more by coming up with something which really captures the warm spirit of our society and the fun we all have together.

Once we have a new logo, we will be putting together a new collection of CLH stash (T-shirts, tops, etc) for people to get hold of, and using the logo to help the CLH ‘brand’ via the website and events like CLX.

Check out the link in the sidebar to find out more.

AGM minutes

March 18, 2010 - 9:22 am No Comments

Thank you to everyone who came to the AGM last night. It was great to have so many people giving feedback and voting for the new committee. Please see our forum for the AGM minutes (on the classes and workshops board).

AGM: 17th March

March 7, 2010 - 12:30 am No Comments

We will be holding our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 17th March
at 8:30pm. To give plenty of time for
the meeting, intermediates will start at 9:15 and last for 45 minutes.
If you are interested in being on the committee, please see below for
details of how to stand. Otherwise, please do come along to the AGM
anyway – this is your opportunity to have your say in how CLH is run.

There are 8 committee positions available: President, Treasurer, and 6
general committee positions. Specific roles for general committee
members will be decided at the first meeting of the new committee, but
the President and Treasurer positions must be voted on individually.
If you apply for one of these positions and do not get it, don’t worry
- your votes will still count towards a general committee position
unless you specify otherwise. For more information about the committee
and its roles, see our constitution:
http://www.cambridgelindy.com/about/constitution. Both students and
non-students may stand, but you should expect to be in Cambridge until
early next year (i.e. not graduating and leaving us!), and you must be a
current CLH member.

To stand for a position, please email info@cambridgelindy.com by Tuesday 17th
March with the following information.
1. Tell us the committee position you are standing for (President,
Treasurer, or General Committee Member).
2. You need to be nominated and seconded by a current CLH member;
please give the names of these members when you apply.
3. Please write few lines about yourself. This will help members to
decide who to vote for if they do not know you personally. It need
only be a very short, informal description.
